Below are all of the subjects being offered at the next equip and equip music training events.

We have put together some suggested pathways that will take you through various subjects depending on your area of ministry. You could plan to be systematic and complete an entire pathway over a few years, or you could simply enrol in whichever subject appeals to you each time equip is run.

Goal: Improve skills and knowledge for playing in a contemporary church music band.

Content: Specialised trainers will both train instrumentalists on their particular instrument as well as make up a top quality demonstration band. Participants will be given opportunities to play at points throughout the course, and will be encouraged to organise at least one band practice between sessions. Participants will learn:

  • How to make a band sound professionally produced
  • How to play in a variety of styles
  • How to work with other instruments to create complementary parts
  • How to arrange music to suit lyrics

Mixing

Richard Wundke Audio Engineer Primary Audio and Design

Goal: Improve mixing skills to maximise the effectiveness of music and speech in a church service.

Content: A hands-on mixing course, in which participants will learn:

  • Theories and principles of mixing — how to make a contemporary band sound great
  • Goals, constraints, character issues and ‘who are we serving?’
  • Balance of channels, role of EQ, compression and reverb, plus any other useful effects
  • Practical projects including a studio-style mix done on some multi-track recorded audio, burned to disk for others to hear

Musicianship

Goal: Improve knowledge of the fundamentals of music to help perform more skilfully and knowledgeably in leading congregational worship music.

Content: Participants will learn:

  • How to create interesting and sympathetic counter-melodies in a variety of contexts
  • How to understand the way chords fit together in a key and apply this knowledge to better understand and perform songs
  • Rhythmic awareness, to help in accurately reading and playing complicated rhythms, as well as awareness of different rhythmic feels
  • How to create simple and effective harmonisations of a melody line

Song Leading

Goal: Improve skills and knowledge for leading a congregation in singing.

Content: The course is aimed not simply at equipping people for singing up the front of church, but for providing pastoral leadership of a congregation. The course will involve a reasonable amount of singing each week, plus videoing and reviewing people's efforts at song leading. Participants will learn:

  • Vocal technique appropriate for leading a congregation in singing
  • Presentation principles and techniques
  • Biblical understanding of the role of song and leading of singing
  • Practical skills for introducing songs

Notes

  • All subjects comprise eight 50-minute sessions. Participants are required to attend all sessions for a particular subject, and therefore may only enrol in one subject at a time.
  • There are minimum and maximum numbers for each subject, so pre-registration is required to secure a place.
  • If a subject is cancelled for any reason, registered participants will be notified and given the option of changing to another subject or cancelling their registration.
